Ensuring No Child Goes Hungry

No child in North Dakota should go to school hungry. In one of the most resource-rich states in the country, child hunger is unacceptable. We have the money to solve this problem right now, what's missing is the political will to put children and their families first.

Research shows that students who participate in school breakfast programs have improved attendance, behavior, academic performance, and academic achievement, as well as decreased tardiness.
Universal school meals can reduce stigma and stress to children and families, increase a child’s ability to learn more, and move more families out of poverty.
More than 15,000 children in North Dakota live below poverty, with as many as 1 in 3 children relying on the Great Plains Food Bank to cover their meals.

This is not a partisan issue. Polling shows 79% of people support free school meals but our legislatures are failing North Dakotans. It’s time to step up and make real change happen. Our voted-in leaders should be doing what the voters have said, care for our children.

North Dakota is one of the wealthiest states in the nation, and yet, we have children going hungry. I support universal access to school meals so every student has the nutrition they need to succeed, without stigma or barriers.
