Understanding North Dakota's Primary Election Process
North Dakota has the primary elections coming up on June 9th. Are you ready to cast your ballot?
Voting is coming up! Are you prepared to do your civic duty and cast your ballot? North Dakota has their primary elections happening on June 9th and their general elections happening on November 3rd. But why two elections? It's all part of North Dakota's process to pick their candidates for local and state government.
First, we start with primary elections. Each party holds conventions in the spring of election years to select and endorse candidates for various offices. While the process varies from state to state, North Dakota has districts nominate individuals and vote on their preferred candidates. In this case, Michael was nominated by District 23. Those nominees then advance to the party convention, where they seek official endorsement from their political party. Candidates who receive this endorsement are automatically placed on the primary election ballot.
During the primary election, voters must choose candidates from a single party, Democrat, Republican, or Independent. Ballots that mix candidates from different parties are not considered valid votes. The winners of each party’s primary then move on to the general election, which is held later in the year.
June 9, 2026 – Primary Election
If you would like Michael to be your representative in District 23, you will need to vote blue (Democrat) down your ballot in the primary election.
November 3, 2026 – General Election
In the general election, voters choose among candidates from any party. The candidate who receives the most votes wins the office.
